October is Foundation Month for Sons of Norway. I would like to comment on the present and future of this great organization.

The Foundation was organized in 1964 and was established as a 501(c)(3) public charity on May 26, 1966. It has just surpassed $3 million in assets. We have a tremendous opportunity to continue its growth and expand its role in the largest Norwegian
heritage and culture organization outside of Norway.

Historically, the Sons of Norway Foundation has focused primarily on scholarships and grants. In fact, in 2003, the Foundation awarded 20 scholarships and made 22 grants. This year, we also activated the Humanitarian Fund, which provides support to our members, lodges and communities. I am especially excited about our Helping Hands to Children program, which provides matching funds to lodges for educational or mentoring programs to benefit children. This program dovetails beautifully with the Adopt A School Program, also recently initiated.

Now, what about the future of this great organization? Member and lodge support is vital to the health of the Foundation. I hope you are planning fundraising events in October to benefit our wonderful Foundation. In my lodge, Past Supreme President Roy Eide is always asking members to start Cent-A-Day collections. This system involves dropping loose change in a jar and bringing it to the lodge to donate to the Sons of Norway Foundation.

Think about the Sons of Norway Foundation when you meet with your field staff representative for a free financial checkup. Remember the Foundation in your will or trust. Large or small, your tax-deductible gift or bequest to the Foundation is important.

If we can increase the assets of the Foundation, there are all sorts of possibilities of getting it more involved with the operations of Sons of Norway.

In recognition of the important role the Foundation plays in Sons of Norway, I am pleased to announce that we have hired a full-time director of the Sons of Norway Foundation. Lifelong Sons of Norway member Cindy Olson is a member of Oslo
1-002 in Minneapolis and brings many outstanding talents to her position as director. She will soon begin regular communication with local lodge Foundation directors.

The future of the Foundation is ours. We can grow it as large as we want it to be, and we can use the assets in so many ways to make the Sons of Norway an even better organization.

Oktober er Fond-måneden for Sons of Norway. Jeg vil gjerne si noen ord om denne flotte organisasjonen per idag og dens framtid.

Sons of Norway Fondet ble etablert i 1964 og ble stiftet som en statsautorisert veldedighetsorganisasjon 26. mai 1966. Den har nylig passert $3 millioner US dollar i verdi. Vi har en kjempemulighet til å fortsette å vokse og utvide fondets rolle i den største organisasjonen for norsk kultur utenfor Norge.

Sons of Norway Fondets historie viser at det stadig har blitt fokusert på å gi bort utdanningsstipend og støtte. I 2003 ga fondet faktisk bort 20 utdanningstipend og 22 støttestipend. I år aktiverte vi også Det Humanitære Fondet, som gir støtte til våre medlemmer, lodger og lokalsamfunn. Jeg gleder meg spesielt over vårt Helping Hands to Children program, som gir tilsvarende midler til lodger for utdannings- og rådgivende programmer, til nytte for barna. Programmet passer bra sammen med Adopt A School programmet, som også nylig er satt i gang.

Ja, hva med organisasjonens framtid? Støtte fra medlemmene og lodgene er viktig for fondet. Jeg håper at dere planlegger innsamlingsaksjoner i oktober for å hjelpe vårt flotte fond. I lodgen min ber alltid den tidligere internasjonale presidenten Roy Eide, medlemmene om å starte Cent-A-Day innsamlinger. Ved innsamlinger gjelder det å legge småpenger i en kasse og ta pengene med til lodgen, for å gi til Sons of Norway Fondet.

Husk på Sons of Norway Fondet når du møter med lokalrepresentanten din for en gratis undersøkelse av økonomien. Husk Fondet i testamentet eller stiftelsen. Stor eller liten, din fradragsberettigede gave til Fondet er viktig. Dersom vi kan øke Fondets verdier finnes det mange muligheter å få det mer involvert i Sons of Norways tiltak.

I forbindelse med den viktige rollen Fondet spiller i Sons of Norway, gleder det meg å kunne gjøre det kjent at vi har ansatt en heltidsleder for Sons of Norway Fondet. Det livslange Sons of Norway-medlemmet Cindy Olson, er medlem i Oslo 1-002 i Minneapolis og tar med seg mange fremragende talenter til sin stilling som leder. Hun skal snart ta regelmessig kontakt med lokallodgenes Fondsdirektører.

Fondets framtid tilhører oss. Vi kan la det vokse og la det bli så stort som vi selv ønsker, og vi kan bruke dets verdier på flere måter for å gjøre Sons of Norway til en enda bedre organisasjon.
