Norway celebrates 2005

2005 will be a very special year for Viking. Starting in January, we will feature an article that offers a snapshot of the history of Norway. Then, beginning in February, a story about some aspect of Norway's contributions during the last 100 years will be presented each month.

June 7, 2005 marks the 100-year anniversary of the peaceful dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway. We are excited to participate in the celebration of this historic event. In Minneapolis, we will celebrate in
June 2005 with an event joining both the Norwegian- and Swedish-American communities. I hope you and your local communities will pick a date during the year to have a celebration commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the dissolution of the union and Norway's reemergence as a modern state. Sons of Norway is an international organization and is exploring special ways
of celebrating this 100-year event. As part of this celebration, we are planning a special gift to the people of Norway. We are also major contributors to the Princess Märtha statue that will be unveiled at the Norwegian Embassy in October 2005. Princess Märtha is a much-loved persona in modern Norway. As the wife of King Olav V and the mother of King Harald V, Princess Märtha was well known to Americans during World War II and was a
pillar of strength, along with King Olav V, for the people in occupied Norway. This is a fitting tribute, and Sons of Norway is pleased to contribute to this gift.

Many Sons of Norway lodges will be celebrating Leif Erikson Day this month. This issue of Viking will take a look at a few of them. After reading about some of the upcoming events on page 31, you may want to join in the
festivities in your Norwegian-American community.

Norge Feirer 2005

2005 blir et veldig spesielt år for Viking. I januar kommer en artikkel med korte sammendrag av Norges historie. I februar begynner en månedlig artikkelserie som skildrer ulike norske bidrag gjennom de siste 100 årene. Den 7. juni 2005 markeres 100-års jubileumet av den fredelige
unionsoppløsningen mellom Sverige og Norge. Vi er begeistret over å delta i feiringen av denne historiske begivenheten. I juni 2005 vil vi feire med en
begivenhet som forener de norsk-amerikanske og de svensk-amerikanske samfunnene. Jeg håper at du og din lokale gruppe bestemmer en dato i løpet av året til å feire 100-års jubileet for unionsoppløsningen og Norges
gjenreisning som en moderne nasjon.

Sons of Norway er en internasjonal organisasjon og utforsker nå ulike måter som dette 100-års jubileet kan feires på. Som en del av feiringen har vi planer om å overrekke en spesiell gave til Norges befolkning. Vi er også store bidragsytere til Prinsesse Märthas statue som blir avdekket ved den norske ambassaden i oktober 2005. Prinsesse Märtha er en høyt verdsatt figur i det moderne Norge. Som Kong Olavs hustru og mor til Kong Harald V var Prinsesse Märtha godt kjent av amerikanere under den annen verdenskrig og hun var, i likhet med Kong Olav, et symbol på styrke for det norske folket under okkupasjonen. Dette er en verdig hyllest og Sons of Norway er stolte av å bidra til denne gaven.

Mange av lodgene i Sons of Norway feirer Leiv Erikson Day denne måneden. Denne utgaven av Viking vil ta en nærmere titt på noen av feiringene. Etter at du har lest om disse begivenhetene på side 31 har du kanskje lyst til å
