 Adopt a School: our fifth Anniversary!
My how time flies when we are having fun! Yes, it has been five years since Sons of Norway started our Adopt A School program. And what incredible fun it has been for lodges, our many volunteers and the students in the local schools we serve. These positive experiences assure that Adopt A School will continue to be an important community outreach program for Sons of Norway for years to come. Currently, we have 211 lodges participating.
How did it get started? The International Board sought to establish a national cause for members to rally around that would help our communities. In the fall of 2001, the District Presidents’ Council, headed by Dan Rude (now our international vice president), suggested we consider starting an Adopt A School program. It was immediately seen to be the right fit for Sons of Norway. Jane Grinde, a Sons of Norway member who is director of community learning and partnerships for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, developed the guidelines for the program. Adopt A School was implemented in March 2003, starting us on a world-class adventure.
Key to conducting the program are our district Adopt A School coordinators, who work with their lodges in starting a program and sharing ideas of what others are doing. An important feature is the wide range of activities that a lodge can consider, making it easy to tailor programs to the interests and experience of members and the needs of local schools. A common thread of the program is exposing students, teachers and communities to the culture of another country, an important experience for people of the world in our need to understand and respect the culture and heritage of others.

ADOPT A SCHOOL: VÅRT 5 ÅRS JUBILEUM!
Det er utrolig hvor fort tiden går når man har det gøy! Ja, det er nå fem år siden Sons of Norway startet programmet Adopt A School. Og det har vært utrolig morsomt for lodgene, alle de frivillige og elevene på deltagerskolene. Disse positive erfaringene gjør at Adopt A School kommer til å forbli et viktig nærmiljøtiltak for Sons of Norway i årene fremover. I øyeblikket har vi 211 lodger som er involvert.
Hvordan startet det hele? Det internasjonale styret var på utkikk etter et landsomfattende formål som medlemmene kunne samle seg rundt og som kunne være til nytte i lokalsamfunnene. Høsten 2001 foreslo District President’s Council, ledet av Dan Rude (vår nåværende internasjonale visepresident) at vi burde vurdere et Adopt A School program. Det ble umiddelbart klart at det passet godt for Sons of Norway. Jane Grinde, et medlem av Sons of Norway som også er direktør for lokalopplæring og partnerskap for Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, utviklet retningslinjene for programmet. Adopt A School ble realisert i mars 2003 og satte oss på kursen mot et eventyr i verdensklasse.
Nøkkelen til god programledelse er våre Adopt A School koordinatorer som samarbeider med lodgene for å utvikle et program og dele ideer om hva andre foretar seg. Et viktig trekk er det brede utvalget av aktiviteter som lodgene kan overveie og som gjør det lettere å tilpasse programmet til medlemmenes interesser og erfaringer, og etter skolenes behov. Et gjennomgående tema i programmet er å orientere elever, lærere og lokalsamfunn om andre lands kulturer, noe som beriker mennesker rundt om i verden med hensyn til vårt behov for å forstå og respektere andre kulturer og bakgrunner.
