Have you ever wondered what causes the midnight sun to occur? Check out the August issue of Viking magazine to learn about the science behind the phenomenon. Hint: It’s all about Earth’s axial tilt towards the sun. Here, we highlight some unforgettable ways to make the most of northern Norway’s long summer days.

Golf All Night

Attention golfers! For an amazing golf experience, head 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle to Lofoten on the island of Gimsøy. Tee off in the middle of the night in broad daylight surrounded by the open sea and rugged Norwegian terrain at Lofoten Links. The course boasts a rich Viking heritage and is dubbed one of the coolest experiences in the world.

Cruise the Fjords

During the summer, Lofoten Adventure offers midnight sun safaris. The boat departs from the idyllic fishing village of Henningsvær and travels through the narrow fjords and out to the Atlantic Ocean. During the 2- to 3-hour adventure, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, including sea eagles, puffins, seals and whales.

Run the Midnight Sun Marathon

Lace up your running shoes and head to Tromsø for the world’s northernmost marathon. The race starts and finishes in the city’s center. If you’re not up for the entire race, check out the half-marathon, 10K, 4.2K fun run or the children’s race.

Kayak in Tromsø

Tromsø Villmarkssenter offers many adventures for nature lovers, such as hiking, snow shoeing and dogsledding. In June and July, head to the waters! The midnight sun kayak adventure will take you around Håkøya-Island and up close to Arctic wildlife.
