People dressed in colorful Norwegian folk costumes, games, a disc jockey, a bounce house for children, a full-size Viking ship that folks can climb onto, a traditional people’s parade with flags, and plenty of food including a “Taste of Norway” table featuring Norwegian delicacies will take center stage at a Norwegian Constitution Day celebration in Boulder City right outside Las Vegas on Friday, May 17 starting at 5 p.m. Local Norwegian-Americans, Scandinavians and others from as far away as Norway will come together to celebrate Norway’s national day – similar to the Fourth of July in the United States — at the free event, to which everyone is welcome. Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavski, who is Norwegian-American, will be providing welcoming remarks. The “Syttende Mai” (17th of May) celebrations are sponsored by the Desert Troll and Vegas Viking lodges of the Sons of Norway. While the event is free, donations will be accepted for food. Norwegian beer also will be available for purchase. The event takes place at Bicentennial Park at 999 Colorado St. in Boulder City. At 7 p.m., the parade begins, which will feature the Viking ship, a Boulder City high school marching band, classic cars, pedestrians including some in Norwegian folk costumes and more. The parade will start at the grill on Colorado Street by California Avenue, circle Wilbur Square clockwise, go down Nevada Way, turn left to traverse Arizona Street, turn left at Avenue G and circle left, returning to the starting point.
