SUMMARY:Immigration Story Program- Anne's Letters
DESCRIPTION:Sons of Norway-Mandt Lodge welcomes the public to “Anne’s Letters”\nThursday\, March 12\, at 7:00 PM\nSons of Norway\n317 South Page Street\, in Stoughton. \nWe are so excited to share the Letters from Anne program with you!   Anne Engum was the daughter of Paul and Anne Engum\, born in Norway on July 27\, 1853.  The Engum family emigrated to Coon Valley because the landscape was similar to that of Norway\, with soil that was excellent for farming.  They left Norway on April 12\, 1867\, on the Steamship “Rhea”.  The Engum House\, which is now the centerpiece of the Historic Bekkum Homestead at Norskedalen\, began to be built in 1868.   Anne’s letters were developed based on examples found in “In Their Own Words: Letters from Norwegian Immigrants” by Solveig Zempel and “America-America Letters: A Norwegian-American Family Correspondence” by Bjorn Gunnar Ostgard. Laurie Barrett will lead this interactive night of learning! Refreshments will be served! Everyone is welcome and no reservations are needed! \nPlease contact Darlene Arneson at arnesonfamily5@gmail.com or 608-873-7209 for more information. SUMMARY:Screening of documentary: "The Teacher's Protest"
DESCRIPTION:“The Teacher’s Protest” is an 80 minutes documentary about teachers in 1942 occupied Norway.  Teachers must join Nazi Teacher’s League and teach Nazi ideas in their classrooms.  8\,000 of them write protest letters.  They are threatened with salary withdrawal and the sack.  Still they refuse.  In a desperate attempt to break them\, the Nazi government arrests 1000 male teachers and sends them to prison camps 300 miles above the Arctic Circle.  The education system is in chaos and now the battle begins. \nJon Seal’s documentary weaves together archive footage\, first-hand testimony and skillful animation of Herlov Amland’s poignant drawings to tell this gripping story to an international audience.  The Teacher’s Protest is a sad\, tender and uplifting documentary exploring a completely different kind of war story — an inspiring tale of passive resistance\, where the heroes fight without weapons and still win. \nA lead discussion to follow the screening.

SUMMARY:Eric Dregni "Vikings in the Attic" presents at 2:00 in Spring Grove
DESCRIPTION:Growing up with Swedish and Norwegian grandparents with a dash of Danish thrown in for balance\, Eric Dregni thought Scandinavians were perfectly normal. Who doesn’t enjoy a good\, healthy salad (Jell-O packed with canned fruit\, colored marshmallows\, and pretzels) or perhaps some cod soaked in drain cleaner as the highlights of Christmas? Only later did it dawn on him that perhaps this was just a little strange\, but by then it was far too late: he was hooked and a dyed-in-the-wool Scandinavian himself.\n\n\n\nBut what does it actually mean to grow up Scandinavian-American or to live with these Norwegians\, Swedes\, Finns\, Danes\, and Icelanders among us? In Vikings in the Attic\, Dregni tracks down and explores the significant—and quite often bizarre—historic sites\, tales\, and traditions of Scandinavia’s peculiar colony in the Midwest. It’s a legacy of the unique—collecting silver spoons\, a suspicion of flashy clothing\, shots of turpentine for the common cold\, and a deep love of rhubarb pie—but also one of poor immigrants living in sod houses while their children attend college\, the birth of the co-op movement\, the Farmer–Labor party\, and government agents spying on Scandinavian meetings hoping to nab a socialist or antiwar activist.
