Norway has a vibrant brewery culture and an interesting wine history to match. In the September issue of Viking magazine, we explored the wine culture found throughout Scandinavia. The region’s wine industry has come a long way in recent years, using their unique weather conditions to their advantage by growing berries that thrive in cooler environments and survive warm temperatures as well. Today, natively-sourced red, white and sparkling wines with rich flavor are enjoyed throughout Scandinavia. To learn more about the region’s history of alcohol fermentation and the wine varieties available, check out September’s winemaking feature.

When it comes to beer drinking, the country has a lengthy history. During the Viking age, beer was commonly brewed in the winter. It became such a strong element in Viking culture that in the 10th century, King Haakon required everyone to drink beer during Christmas, with the penalty of a fine for those who didn’t engage in the tradition. While drinking beer is now voluntary, it’s remained a celebrated staple of Norwegian culture, with many breweries to discover throughout the country. Here are three to know.

Nøgne Ø Beer Shop
Founded nearly two decades ago in 2002, this business calls itself Norway’s leading craft brewery, and for good reason. It’s the largest craft beer supplier in Norway and considered one of the top 100 breweries around the globe, offering 20 distinct beers. The options available include pale and citrus-infused ales, as well as IPAs, and each one is intended to pair well with different styles and flavors of food. The brewery prides itself on using only high-quality ingredients like Maris Otter (a UK-sourced barley) to produce flavorful beer that stands out, with new and seasonal editions released regularly.

Oslo Brewing Co.
If you’re in Oslo, check out this friend-founded brewery, which opened in 2015. Together, the group of founders had a valuable skillset fit for success, with backgrounds in areas like graphic design, accounting, sales and plumbing. Inspired by the beauty, adventure and opportunities unique to the city, the group set out on a mission to infuse that energy into the beers they create. The business initially launched by renting space from other breweries in the city, and they’ve since expanded internationally to places like Japan and Rhode Island, CEO Dimitri Yogaratnam’s home state. Today, their beer is known for its Scandinavian ingredients, like fresh Norwegian water and regionally sourced grains, complemented with one-of-a-kind homespun recipes.

Ægir BrewPub
Located in Flåm on the harbor at the end of the world’s deepest fjord, this Viking-inspired brewery opened in 2007 and is housed in a stave church-style building. With a cozy fireplace, statues and plenty of exposed wood, the interior décor alludes to Norse Mythology and is designed to make visitors feel like they’re living in a historical era. Ægir BrewPub offers award-winning beer as well as house-made beverages like aquavit and Viking mead, along with Viking-era food options.
