Sloopers, Cleng Peerson and Immigration prior to Civil War

Faye Auchenpaugh, local historian, will speak on Cleng Peerson’s extensive travels in America and his impact on Norwegian immigration, how Quakers ended up in Norway with its Lutheran national religion, why the Sloopers decided to emigrate, and their voyage and settlement in America. She will also talk of Ole Rynning’s “True Account of America” in which he used a helpful question-and-answer dialog to address the fears of the prospective emigrant and will include patterns of settlement and a brief account of the beginnings of the various Norwegian Lutheran synods. Copies of Rynning’s work will be for sale. FREEWILL DONATION.
