If you have been watching Team Norway play at the FIFA World Cup, you can’t help but notice that Norwegian fans and the country of Norway itself are getting a lot of positive press.
Fans
One thing that stands out are the playful, good vibes of the Norwegian fans at games. They show up as a sea of red soccer jerseys and flag hats, chanting, singing and rowing to support their national team.

Royals
Royal siblings Princess Ingrid Alexandra (22) and Prince Sverre Magnus (20) have gone all in, attending several of Norway’s games at the World Cup. Showing up looking crisp in navy and white summer suits and red Team Norway scarves, all formality goes out the window when Norway scores—the pair jump up and down with unbridled joy.
Meanwhile, the King and Queen have been watching games from the Palace in Oslo, and after Norway’s historic win over Brazil, Crown Prince Haakon joined 100,000 fans celebrating on the streets of Oslo for a massive chant of RO—rowing the Viking ship.
Team members
Team Norway is doing their part to feed the public interest in their team. First there was the Viking team photo shoot where the players all got outfitted with shields, spears and axes.
Then, since arriving in the US, the team has done a great job posting daily photos and videos on social media. Their Instagram surpassed a million followers since the FIFA World Cup began.
Erling Haaland’s persona in particular has grabbed the public’s attention. His playful interviews, family lore of being a 2nd generation footballer, and habit of celebrating goals by assuming a zen meditation pose have certainly garnered many followers.
Game Fuel
The Norwegian Men’s Squad are also catching a lot of press for their unique take on tournament meals. Can you blame them for wanting to eat familiar foods before their high-stakes matches?
Celebration
The Viking Row chant of RO, RO, RO has gone viral, with fans rowing in Times Square and being emulated not only at Sons of Norway’s District 4 Convention, but also at Norwegian kindergartens and by the players themselves.
Even Google is getting in on the Norway team support: to find a fun “easter egg,” search for “Erling Haaland” on Google and watch the bottom of your screen, or click here to experience the magic..
