If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to live in an Arctic village during the winter months, without the hassle and stress of a permanent move, there is a unique opportunity available to you. There is a program that was launched in 2024, known as the Arctic Digital Nomads Grant, that provides digital nomads free office space and accommodations for a 1-3 month stay in one of three areas: Vágur in the Faroe Islands, Westfjords in Iceland, or Geirangerfjord in Norway.
The goal of this initiative is to “breathe life” into these remote areas that don’t commonly experience tourism in the winter months, as they do in the warmer months. Additionally, the hope is that some of the nomads’ stays may lead to something more permanent and help revitalize these landscapes for years to come.
There really isn’t too much of a catch for this wonderful experience being offered. If awarded a grant, you’ll be connected with other fellow explorers and will get to live as a local in the area of your choosing. One of the only asks is that you contribute to the community you are immersed in, whatever capacity that may be. Additionally, you can bring your family and/or pets for your stay.
To get off the ground, the project was funded by the Nordic Atlantic Cooperation (NORA). In its first year, the program received about 300 applications. Shockingly, over 15,000 applications have been received this year. NORA plans now to continue the project and open the grant every year. This year they have provided 750,000 kroner to the effort. The tricky task for the program will be selecting the 15 recipients who will be given the trip of a lifetime.
These grants are a unique and clever way to draw interest to areas that may not be on the top of one’s list. It is evident with the application activity this year from people all over the world, that there is certainly interest in these places. Who knows – maybe you could be the next nomad!
