The holidays are a time when members like to gather, cook and enjoy their favorite Norwegian foods, especially traditional favorites like lefse, rosettes, meatballs, and even lutefisk. While heritage foods are on our minds, why not organize a lodge recipe exchange?

Tips on Hosting a Recipe Exchange

Decide on the Format

  • Will you meet in person, or over Zoom?
  • Are you swapping paper recipes, or sending them virtually?
  • If printing recipes, is there a preferred size?
  • The event organizer may choose to compile all of the recipes to distribute copies at the event, or to send them via e-mail.

Time and Place

  • Where will you gather and when?
  • Decide who is hosting and what is needed on-site
  • A Sunday afternoon can be helpful, so people have a chance to prep and cook/bake on Friday and Saturday.

To Sample or Not to Sample

  • Let people know if they should show up hungry
  • Label foods well for dietary restrictions

What to Bring

  • If meeting in-person, have participants sign up, so you know how many to expect.
  • Do attendees need to bring containers?
  • What size/kind?
  • Leak-proof Tupperware and cookie tins

Choose a Theme

Balancing Act

  • If you are focusing on soups, plan for a dessert refreshment to counter the savory taste profile.
  • If hosting a sweets exchange, provide chips, veggies or nuts for tasters to balance out the flavors.
